JOHN ERIC ALEXANDER
I grew up in a creative environment. My mom is a designer and calligrapher, and held the position of Senior Designer at Penguin-Putnam Books for Young Readers for many years. My dad, Sam Alexander, was a creative force in the world of design for film and TV. Founder of Zeplin Productions and Sam Alexander Productions, he is credited as a pioneer of the new visual medium he called “Motion Graphics” back in the early 1970's. He was also a passionate photographer, and spent much of his free time exploring NYC with a Leica slung around his neck.
I graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1983 with a BFA in Communication Design. I also took photography classes, and spent many, many hours in the darkroom. After I graduated, I fell into a very successful career scoring music for theatrical trailers and Network TV. After a 20 year run as a first call composer and producer, I grew restless. With an eye on getting back to my design roots, I began a career transition into Motion Graphics.
Fast forward 15 years, and I'm heading up my own Motion Graphic company, Activateyourimage, Inc. Credited with title and design work for hundreds of projects, for clients including: Warner Bros., 20th Century Fox, Miramax, A&E, FOX Sports, ESPN, The Bio Channel, The History Channel, USA, Fox Reality, AMC Networks, SPEED, TLC, The Sportsman Channel and FUEL, Activateyourimage has been a very successful and rewarding venture.
So, what's next? Photography has always been an enjoyable "hobby" that I happily shared with my dad. Over the years, I have spent countless hours behind the lens and in front of a Mac, crafting my photo skills, but only sharing my work with family and friends. A recent move to Brooklyn jump-started my photographic juices, and I've been shooting some of my best photos in this city that never sleeps. Photos that I am finally sharing with the world, not just my family! Many of those photos have begun to gain traction in the photo community so, with a renewed confidence, and at the urging of family, friends and clients, I have begun to take a more serious look into photography as a compliment to, and inspiration for, my design work. This is my photography site.
